As a painter, I have always been interested in the dynamics of non-verbal communication, the things we reveal with the glint of an eye, the stance of a body or a shake of a head. I am fascinated by the inner dialogue that takes place within each individual mind, and how that relates to and informs spoken exchanges between us. Our memories, thoughts and daydreams flow alongside these interactions, acting as backdrops to the relationships we form. What we think about ourselves and how we choose to represent ourselves affects these interactions, filtering into and being silently interpreted and processed by others. In this way our perceptions of ourselves shift and disrupt the meaning of the words we use and the relationships we create.
